MEDIEVAL & FANTASY WORLD CREATION

If you are looking at this site, I'm guessing that you are into medieval / fantasy games or story creation. So am I. I'm working pretty hard to write a fantasy short story, and have done a lot of research into the process, which I thought I'd.

Creating a believable fantasy world takes a lot of work. There are lots of details you need to work. Lots of places, both natural and man made. Towns, cities, castles, rivers, mountain passes and fords. To be continued.

NAMING Methods

If it's in your story or game, it needs a name. Start naming a few things, and you'll quickly discover that it's tough to be original. But there are several standard naming conventions, which I think you'll find are quite universal. Each bullet point contains a few examples using the same formula. This is a work in progress.

  • Ancient Oak Fortress, Stone Waste Motte, Twin Pine Pass
  • The Dead Marshes (Tolkien), The Dread Fort (GRRM), The Boar's Nest (The Dukes of Hazzard!), The Prancing Pony (Tolkien)
  • Ivy Hall, River Town (Riverton), Stone Forest
  • Lord Woodford's Hall, Ashbury Forest
  • The War of the Nine Penny Kings, The Battle of the Five Armies (Tolkien)
  • The King's Wood (GRRM), The Mage's Swamp, The Lord's Round (Abercrombie)
  • Widow Maker (GRRM), Red Wake (GRRM)
  • Great Wyk (GRRM)
